To welcome everyone back in person, we will be hosting a networking lunch to connect digital scholars across campus. Feast with us in the pilot Digital Scholarship Center (SL-209) from noon – 2 p.m. Friday, February 2. Bring your Digital Scholarship ideas, questions and appetite! Register or walk in.

Dear Data Binghamton

Dear Data, launched last spring at Binghamton, is back with events this spring. Based on Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec’s original project, Dear Data is a campus-wide initiative to promote self-evaluative data collection. Participants are prompted to craft analog data visualizations using data on hand.

As part of Love Data Week, the Dear Data team will host a launch event for the Dear Data Exhibit at the Fine Arts library entrance. We will be displaying last year’s Dear Data postcards and materials. The exhibit will include a station where you can use your personal story to create colorful visualizations. The launch event will take place from 1 – 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14. The exhibit and visualization station will be up for the entire semester, so check it out!

Dear Data will also host three different write-in events for participants to create personal visualizations based on this year’s theme of gratitude, led by Dear Data group members. The write-ins are open to all and will be in person on the following dates in the pilot Digital Scholarship Center (SL 209):

  • 3 – 4 p.m. Thursday, February 29
  • 2 – 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 27
  • 2 – 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 16

The Dear Data group, which involves collaborators from across campus, is led by Amber Simpson from Teaching Learning and Educational Leadership (TLEL) and Ruth Carpenter from Binghamton Libraries. It is sponsored by Digital Scholarship in the Libraries and the Digital and Data Studies Minor.

Love Data Week

Binghamton will be participating in Love Data Week for the first time. Love Data Week was started in 2016 to celebrate data and contextualize its ever-changing role in our lives. Check out the History of International Love Data Week for more information. It has since grown to be international in scale, with dozens of participating institutions. This year’s theme is “My Kind of Data,” and you can check out offerings from other institutions on the events page

To celebrate Love Data Week, in addition to the Dear Data Launch event, we will also be hosting a Data Viz Matchmaking workshop with the Data Visualization Interest Group. For those interested in expanding their research with data visualization, the workshop will help match participants with different data viz tools. Bring your topic, research or existing data to discuss what you are looking to create. Register or walk in.

Workshops

The Digital Scholarship team will be offering three workshop series this semester. Attendance is flexible, and the format is meant to serve both those who wish to build their skills over a semester and those who want to drop in for specific topics. All sessions will be in person in the pilot Digital Scholarship Center (SL 209). Click on the link to register and see individual sessions.
