V34 1526.<\/p>\n<p>This elegant yet highly complex octavo is actually three\u00a0books that have been rebound together subsequent to publication.\u00a0 The other two\u00a0books are: \u00a0Valla, Lorenzo. <em>Lavrentius Valla De libero arbitrio<\/em>. Basileae : Apud And. Crat., an. 1526;\u00a0\u00a0<strong>and<\/strong>, Valerius Flaccus, Gaius. <em>C. Valerii Flacci Argonautic\u00f4n libri octo.<\/em> Argentorati : Excudebat Ioannes Knoblochus, anno 1525 mense Iulio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The present day binding dates to the late 18th century or early 19th century.\u00a0 It is a full\u00a0 red morocco leather binding.\u00a0\u00a0The spine has\u00a0four false raised bands bordered in\u00a0gilt.\u00a0 A brown morocco leather piece with author and title stamped in gilt is adhered to the spine.\u00a0 The front and back covers are rebacked with the original medieval dark brown leather covers from one of the publications. Although difficult to see because of the leather&#8217;s dark coloring and its degradation,\u00a0both covers\u00a0are decorated in blind.\u00a0 The front cover&#8217;s decoration consists of two angels, each of which is above and below an heraldic emblem.\u00a0 All three items\u00a0are\u00a0located\u00a0inside a\u00a0triple\u00a0ruled border or panel. The back cover has a faintly discernible\u00a0large floral medallion in its center.\u00a0 Wear and leather rot have caused the\u00a0tooled decoration to be all but invisible.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the books was printed in a different city by a different printer. <em>Elegantiae vocabulorum <\/em>(below, left) has a\u00a0highly decorative paneled title page.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/128.226.136.91\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/01\/Elegantiae-t.p.-15261.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-831\" src=\"https:\/\/128.226.136.91\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/01\/Elegantiae-t.p.-15261.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/01\/Elegantiae-t.p.-15261.jpg 292w, https:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/01\/Elegantiae-t.p.-15261-196x300.jpg 196w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/128.226.136.91\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/01\/vale-15251.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-835 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/128.226.136.91\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/01\/vale-15251.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/01\/vale-15251.jpg 279w, https:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/01\/vale-15251-187x300.jpg 187w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 279px) 100vw, 279px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The book was printed by Michael Hillenius, most likely in Antwerp.\u00a0\u00a0It was printed using a roman style font inspired by Geofroy Tory&#8217;s work, and is typical of the time period.\u00a0 The text has\u00a0wood block initials with decorative vignettes.\u00a0 There are running titles at the top of the pages.\u00a0Guide words and gathering signatures are at the end of the text; these printer&#8217;s aids were essential as the pages were unnumbered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>C. Valerii<\/em> (above, right) was printed in 1525 in Argentorati (or, the modern city of Strasbourg, Germany)by Ioannes Knoblochus.\u00a0 The\u00a0font\u00a0style used is italic, and this\u00a0typeface was invented by Aldus Manutius in 1501.\u00a0 The text has wood block initials with decorated\u00a0vignettes, running titles, gathering signatures, and guide words.\u00a0 The colophon is on the recto side of\u00a0 the last page.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lavrentius Valla <\/em>was printed in 1526 in Basil, Switzerland\u00a0by Andream Cratandrum.\u00a0 Unlike the other two title pages, this\u00a0book has a plainly printed title page.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Its text was also printed using\u00a0an italic typeface, and\u00a0also has\u00a0wood block initials decorated with vignettes, running titles and\u00a0side-notes. Andream Cratandrum&#8217;s printer&#8217;s device is found on the verso of p.87 (see below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/128.226.136.91\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/01\/s-device.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/128.226.136.91\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/01\/s-device.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"448\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the bound volume, there are handwritten notes\u00a0across the pages, in the margins and on the endpapers, indicating all three publications were heavily used by their previous owner(s).\u00a0 In the past, book dealers and collectors\u00a0often considered such use marks destructive and highly\u00a0undesirable in the \u00a0rare books they wished to sell or collect.\u00a0 Scholars and researchers, however,\u00a0have\u00a0found\u00a0such examples of marginalia and use patterns to be of significant\u00a0historical interest.\u00a0\u00a0These comments written centuries\u00a0ago\u00a0give perspective and insight to the thought processes, opinions and even doodlings of the previous owners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Valla, Lorenzo, and Jacobus Montanus.
