Photo courtesy of Binghamton University Archives.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Binghamton University Libraries&#8217; \u00a0and Special Collections were saddened to hear of the passing of friend, Aldo Bernardo.\u00a0Bernardo, 91, was a distinguished service professor of Italian and comparative literature. He earned his bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees from Brown University and his PhD from Harvard University.<\/p>\n<p>One of the few\u00a0remaining original faculty members of Harpur College, Dr.\u00a0Bernardo joined the faculty in 1949 (then Triple Cities College) and retired in 1987 after 38 years of teaching, research,\u00a0and service to the University. Among other accomplishments, Dr. Bernardo founded the Center for Medieval and\u00a0Early Renaissance Studies. He was the first of the original\u00a0faculty to receive the Order of Merit from a foreign government (the equivalent of knighthood from the Republic of\u00a0Italy), was responsible for adding the performance dimension to the University\u2019s Fine Arts program, and was the\u00a0first to initiate a multi-nation study abroad program for undergraduates (a Mediterranean studies program in Venice,\u00a0Malta, and Tunisia).\u00a0A prolific writer, he was also the author of several books, including the\u00a0<em>Companion to Dante\u2019s Divine Comedy: A Comprehensive Guide for the Student and General Reader<\/em> (2006).<\/p>\n<p>In December 2010,\u00a0Aldo and Reta Bernardo gifted the University Libraries with a large number of books from his personal library. This donation greatly enhanced the Libraries\u2019 collection of Medieval and Renaissance resources. Notable titles included: Machiavelli\u2019s 1540\u00a0<em>Discorsi di Niccolo Machiavelli sopra la prima deca di Tito Livio<\/em>;\u00a0Giovanni Battista de Castiglione\u2019s 1532 <em>I Luoghi difficili\u00a0del Petrarcha nuovamente dichiarati, da M.
