{"id":458,"date":"2011-07-07T15:06:40","date_gmt":"2011-07-07T15:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/news\/specialcollections\/?p=458"},"modified":"2011-07-07T15:06:40","modified_gmt":"2011-07-07T15:06:40","slug":"of-the-american-field-service-and-afs-intercultural-programs-is-cool-site-for-july-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/specialcollections\/2011\/07\/07\/of-the-american-field-service-and-afs-intercultural-programs-is-cool-site-for-july-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs is Cool Site for July 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time, finding aids for fifty-six World War I and II<br \/>\ncollections at the Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural<br \/>\nPrograms (AFS Archives) are searchable online on AFS\u2019s Web site: <a title=\"This external link will open in a new window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.afs.org\/afs-history-and-archives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.afs.org\/afs-history-and-archives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The unprecedented availability of the collections was made possible through<br \/>\na grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission<br \/>\n(NHPRC.)\u00a0 This grant allowed AFS to survey 175 cubic feet of archival<br \/>\nmaterial, arrange, describe, and preserve collections at a basic level, and to<br \/>\ncreate a Web site where researchers can easily browse subject terms, creators,<br \/>\nrecord groups, and fifty-six new finding aids.\u00a0 The finding aids are now<br \/>\nalso catalogued in regional and national databases.<\/p>\n<p>The AFS Archives contains documents, photographs, works of art, recordings,<br \/>\nand artifacts related to the history and development of the organization that<br \/>\nis now referred to as AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc.\u00a0 AFS began as a<br \/>\nvoluntary ambulance and camion corps serving with the French Army during the<br \/>\nFirst World War.\u00a0 The ambulance service was reactivated during World War<br \/>\nII, and American volunteers drove ambulances in France, North Africa, the<br \/>\nMiddle East, Italy, Germany, India, and Burma, and carried over 700,000<br \/>\ncasualties by the end of the war.\u00a0 Today, AFS is an international exchange<br \/>\norganization for students and young adults that operates in more than eighty<br \/>\ncountries, and organizes and supports intercultural learning experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afs.org\/news-and-events\/article\/?article_id=952\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time, finding aids for fifty-six World War I and II collections at the Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs (AFS Archives) are searchable online on AFS\u2019s Web site: www.afs.org\/afs-history-and-archives.
