The Special Collections and University Archives<\/a> department of the University Libraries’\u00a0was fortunate to acquire recently a remarkable rare book for the William J. Haggerty Collection of French Colonial History<\/a>:\u00a0 Des colonies; particuli\u00e8rement de la Guyane fran\u00e7aise.<\/em>\u00a0 It was written by P.-Ch. de Saint-Amant,\u00a0who was the\u00a0\u00a0private secretary to the Baron de Laussat, governor of Guyana.\u00a0\u00a0 The book was published by\u00a0Chez Barrois & Delaunay\u00a0in Paris in 1821.<\/p>\n

This is a scarce first edition, and of which only 12 copies exist.\u00a0 References to this work can be found in Sabin 74985; but not in Muller; not in Howes; not in Leclerc; not in the Beinecke Lesser Antilles Collection; nor in Kress, Goldsmiths’ or Einaudi.<\/p>\n

From the description of the dealer’s catalogue, the work is divided into two sections:\u00a0 the first section deals with the history, government, institutions, commerce and cultivation of French Guyana in particular, and the second part deals with the French government’s projects\u00a0 to populate the colonies in\u00a0general\u00a0by various means:\u00a0\u00a0invitations to Chinese labors and free people of color from the British colonies to work in the colony;\u00a0 the use of\u00a0galley slaves to populate the colonies and the\u00a0possibility importing French farmers.\u00a0 This book is a primary source and adds to the printed information contained in the William J. Haggerty Collection of French Colonial History.<\/a><\/p>\n

Despite numerous attempts in the 1850s to import workers from elsewhere, including convicts from France, to work the plantations,\u00a0almost all of these attempts to populate and develop the colony failed.<\/p>\n

The binding is contemporary brown half calf with tree marbled paper covered boards.\u00a0 The spine is in gilt compartments with gilt lettering to spine.\u00a0\u00a0It’s pagination is:\u00a0 xiv, [2], 246, [2, errata, blank] pp. 8vo.<\/p>\n

Although not yet cataloged, the book is still available for study in the Special Collections and University Archives <\/a>department of the Bartle Library.\u00a0 Special Collections and University Archives is open to the public Monday – Friday, from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
