Binghamton University Libraries’ Special Collections holds many of Longfellow’s works, including Outre-mer : a pilgrimage beyond the sea, (image above) a prose collection which was the poet’s first major work. The library’s copy of Outre-mer has a decorative cover indicative of publisher’s bindings of the mid-1800s to early-1900s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine on this day in 1807. His works include\u00a0 The Golden Legend<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>The Song of Hiawatha<\/a><\/i>, and\u00a0Evangeline<\/a><\/i>. He was also the first American to translate\u00a0Dante Alighieri’s\u00a0<\/a>Divine Comedy<\/a>.<\/i><\/p>\n

Longfellow was one of the most popular poets of his day. He was a traveler, a linguist, and a romantic who identified with the great traditions of European literature and thought. At the same time, he was rooted in American life and history, which charged his imagination with untried themes and made him ambitious for success.<\/p>\n

Longfellow died at the age of 75 in 1882. When\u00a0Walt Whitman\u00a0heard of the poet\u2019s death, he wrote that, while Longfellow\u2019s work \u201cbrings nothing offensive or new, does not deal hard blows,” he was the sort of bard most needed in a materialistic age: \u201cHe comes as the poet of melancholy, courtesy, deference\u2014poet of all sympathetic gentleness\u2014and universal poet of women and young people. I should have to think long if I were ask\u2019d to name the man who has done more and in more valuable directions, for America.\u201d<\/p>\n
