To his amazement, its yellowing pages contained the rags-to-riches story of Terry, the female brindle cairn terrier who played Toto in the enduring film\u00a0<i>The Wizard of Oz<\/i>. \u00a0[Incidentally, Terry\u00a0was paid a $125 salary each week during the filming of <em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em>, which was far more than many of the human actors.]<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2696\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2696\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/news\/specialcollections\/files\/2015\/06\/Toto20001-page-0.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2696 \" alt=\"Toto20001-page-0\" src=\"http:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/news\/specialcollections\/files\/2015\/06\/Toto20001-page-0.jpg\" width=\"285\" height=\"395\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terry&#8217;s official studio portrait.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When she died in 1945, Terry&#8217;s manager and animal trainer,\u00a0Carl Spitz,\u00a0buried her on his ranch in Studio City, CA. However, the construction of the\u00a0Ventura Freeway\u00a0in 1958 destroyed her grave [which led to Carroll&#8217;s discovery]. On June 18, 2011 a permanent memorial for Terry was dedicated at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seeing-stars.com\/ImagePages\/TotoMonumentPhoto.shtml\">Hollywood Forever Cemetery<\/a>\u00a0in Los Angeles.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><br \/>\n<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><i>I, Toto\u00a0<\/i>traces the canine star\u2019s tragic beginnings, her exhilarating film career [she appeared in 13 different films!], and her happy retirement in Southern California with Carl Spitz. This book offers the inside scoop on Toto\u2019s signature role, her costars [including Shirley Temple, Spencer Tracy and Joan Crawford], and the making of\u00a0<i>The Wizard of Oz<\/i>. Toto\u2019s lovingly illustrated scrapbook features 150 photographs collected over the dog\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Willard Carroll\u00a0is an Emmy Award\u2013winning producer, writer, and director. He has written and directed the feature films\u00a0<i>The Runestone<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Tom\u2019s Midnight Garden<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Playing by Heart<\/i>, and\u00a0<i>Marigold<\/i>. He has amassed the world\u2019s largest collection of\u00a0<i>Wizard of Oz<\/i>\u00a0memorabilia, documented in\u00a0<i>100 Years of Oz: A Century of Classic Images from\u00a0<\/i>The<i>\u00a0<\/i>Wizard of Oz<i>\u00a0Collection of Willard Carroll<\/i>. Together with Tom Wilhite, he founded the <a href=\"http:\/\/ozmuseum.com\/blogs\/news\/14711913-visiting-oz-on-this-side-of-the-rainbow\">National Oz Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>I, Toto<\/em> is part of the Allan Rogg Collection and is located in Special Collections on the second floor of the Bartle Library.
