Greeting the seafarers was the Seamen\u2019s Church Institute (SCI), a 177-year-old maritime service organization affiliated with the Episcopal Church that handled their needs while in port and at sea.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cBecause of this,\u201d said SCI Associate Archivist John Thayer, \u201cthe story of SCI is inseparable from the story of the modern seafarer, as well as the story of the development of downtown Manhattan and the Port of New Jersey.\u201d Thayer and his team recently completed a major digitization of some 12,500 items from SCI\u2019s archive collection, the beginning of a project to share the Institute\u2019s collection of historic artifacts that record the development of New York and maritime commerce.<\/div>\n<div>Explore this rich history of mariners by going directly to<a href=\"https:\/\/gencat1.eloquent-systems.com\/webcat\/request\/DoMenuRequest?SystemName=The+Seamen's+Church+Institute+of+New+York+%26+New+Jersey&amp;UserName=wa+public&amp;Password=&amp;TemplateProcessID=6000_854_6086&amp;bCachable=1&amp;MenuName=Public+keyword+search&amp;eloquentref=sci-public\"> SCI&#8217;s Database<\/a>.
