Smelcer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Dr. Smelcer received his\u00a0Ph.D. in English and Creative Writing\u00a0from\u00a0Binghamton University, where he received the Chancellor&#8217;s Award for Outstanding Graduate Research. He is a\u00a0son of an Alaska Native father from the Ahtna Tribe of Alaska. All his life, Dr. John Smelcer was raised in Alaska to know traditional Indian ways and pursued a\u00a0largely subsistence lifestyle.\u00a0He has dedicated his life to preserving his Ahtna heritage, language, traditional Indian knowledge, archaeological sites, and he has taught literature, creative writing, public speaking, and Native Studies for over twenty years. Dr. John Smelcer&#8217;s novels, short stories, poems, essays, screenplays\u00a0and articles,\u00a0anchored in Alaskan culture, have been published and translated worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2077\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2077\" style=\"width: 353px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/news\/specialcollections\/files\/2013\/11\/Smelcerphoto3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2077 \" alt=\"Dr. John Smelcer.
