Beers.<\/p>\n<p>Well known as an author, preacher, and theologian,\u00a0Timothy Dwight was born May 15, 1752 in\u00a0Northampton, Massachusetts. The Dwight family had a long association with Yale College, as it was then known.\u00a0Dwight graduated from Yale in 1769 (when was only 17 years old).<\/p>\n<p>Licensed to preach in 1777, he was appointed by Congress chaplain in General\u00a0Samuel Holden Parsons&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Connecticut Continental Brigade<\/i>. He served with distinction, inspiring the troops with his sermons and the stirring war songs he composed, the most famous of which is &#8220;Columbia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a style=\"font-size: 12px\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Timothy_Dwight_IV_eighth_president_Yale_College.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/3\/3f\/Timothy_Dwight_IV_eighth_president_Yale_College.jpg\/250px-Timothy_Dwight_IV_eighth_president_Yale_College.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"385\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Engraving of Timothy Dwight IV with signature (from Wikipedia).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">Dwight was the leader of the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\">evangelical<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\">New Divinity<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">\u00a0faction of Congregationalism \u2014 a group closely identified with Connecticut&#8217;s emerging commercial elite. Although fiercely opposed by religious moderates \u2014 most notably Yale president\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\">Ezra Stiles<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">\u00a0\u2014 he was elected to the presidency of Yale on Stiles&#8217;s death in 1795.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">His ability as a teacher, and his talents as a religious and political leader, soon made the college the largest institution of higher education in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">North America<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dwight&#8217;s sermon in <em>The true means of establishing public happiness<\/em>\u00a0was delivered to the Connecticut Society of Cincinnati &#8211; a group made up of former Revolutionary War soldiers.<em>\u00a0<\/em>The sermon\u00a0speaks on the necessity of creating a society free from the &#8220;pernicious influence of enormous Wealth, and of extended Conquest.&#8221; For, if those tendencies dominate, &#8220;the national character becomes tainted, of course, with sickliness and corruption.&#8221; The &#8220;influence of freedom&#8221; has roused mankind &#8220;with a returning consciousness of energy and action.&#8221; That, combined with &#8220;religious education&#8221; and the &#8220;influence of parents,&#8221; may be sufficient to stave off evil.<\/p>\n<p>Special Collections&#8217; copy of\u00a0<em>The true means of establishing public happiness<\/em> is disbound.
