Photo by Jonathan Cohen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By Eric Coker<\/p>\n<p>Binghamton University needs to get \u201cbetter to get bigger, while also getting \u201cbigger to get better\u201d in 2013, President Harvey Stenger said during his State of the University address on Jan. 22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that the effort many of you have put in over the past six months to develop the Road Map\u2019s 3I\u2019s \u2013 initiatives, innovations and ideas \u2013 has given us the tactics that are going to make us better, bigger and measurable,\u201d Stenger said to faculty and staff gathered in Lecture Hall 1.<\/p>\n<p>The two-hour event, formerly known as the University Forum, was what Stenger called \u201ca team presentation.\u201d The address featured talks from the University\u2019s five vice presidents \u2013 Donald Nieman, Brian Rose, Bahgat Sammakia, Marcia Craner and James Van Voorst \u2212 and Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott.<\/p>\n<p>The University plans to \u201cget bigger\u201d by adding 400 undergraduate students, at least 100 graduate students, 33 tenure-track faculty members and 35 staff members in 2013. Expansion has numerous benefits, Stenger said, citing how the University aids the local economy, how research helps society, and the advantages of name recognition around the country and world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to see more things Binghamton in the world,\u201d he said. \u201cBinghamton! Binghamton! Binghamton! Say it over and over again: Binghamton! It sounds great.
