But rather\u00a0than gathering information from\u00a0books as you would in a library,\u00a0people who do research in\u00a0archives often gather firsthand\u00a0facts, data, and evidence from\u00a0letters, reports, notes, memos,\u00a0photographs, audio and video\u00a0recordings, and other primary\u00a0sources.<\/p>\n<p>Read more<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.archivists.org\/sites\/all\/files\/WhatIsAnArchives.pdf\"> here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the course of daily life, individuals,\u00a0organizations, and governments create and\u00a0keep information about their activities. \u00a0Archivists are professionals who assess,\u00a0collect, organize, preserve, maintain control\u00a0of, and provide access to the portions of\u00a0this information that have lasting value. \u00a0Archivists keep records that have enduring\u00a0value as reliable memories of the past, and\u00a0they help people find and understand the\u00a0information they need in those records.<\/p>\n<p>These records, and the places in which they\u00a0are kept, are called \u201carchives.\u201d Archival\u00a0records take many forms, including\u00a0correspondence, diaries, financial and legal\u00a0documents, photographs, video or sound\u00a0recordings, and electronic records.<\/p>\n<p>An archives serves to strengthen collective\u00a0memory by creating a reliable information\u00a0bank that provides access to an irreplaceable\u00a0asset \u2013 an organization\u2019s, government\u2019s,\u00a0or society\u2019s primary sources<\/p>\n<p>American Archives Month is a time to focus\u00a0on the importance of records of enduring\u00a0value and to enhance public recognition for\u00a0the people and programs that are responsible\u00a0for maintaining our communities\u2019 vital\u00a0historical records.<\/p>\n<p>Why not stop into the Binghamton University Archives today to learn more about archives and the history of Binghamton University?
