Joe.<\/p>\n<p>The University Libraries&#8217;<em><strong> Up Front <\/strong><\/em>copy is a first edition that contains 161 of Mauldin&#8217;s famous wartime cartoons.\u00a0 It is an association copy; a book that is dedicated and signed by the author.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/128.226.136.91\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/Up-front-cover11.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1357 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/128.226.136.91\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/Up-front-cover11.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/Up-front-cover11.jpeg 325w, https:\/\/libnews.binghamton.edu\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/09\/Up-front-cover11-203x300.jpeg 203w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shown above is the front cover of <em><strong>Up Front<\/strong><\/em>. After being wounded, he and his cartoons enjoyed an increased popularity with the regular soldiers, but less so with the higher ranking officers.\u00a0 Mauldin had planned to have Willie and Joe die at the end of World War II, but the U.S. miliary newspaper, <em>Stars and Stripes<\/em>, was able to change his mind.<\/p>\n<p>Mauldin tried his hand at various careers after the war, but none gave him the popularity or fame as his cartoons of Willie and Joe.\u00a0 Mauldin returned to creating editorial cartoons and received his second Pulitzer Prize in 1958.
