Special Collection’s Student Assistant, Elizabeth Grace, has chosen our featured book for March 2011: Daughters of Genius:
In honor of Women’s History Month and the 100th International Women’s Day on March 8, 2011, a book about famous and notable women seemed fitting. Daughters of Genius: A Series of Sketches of authors, artists, reformers, and heroines, queens, princesses, and women of society, women eccentric and peculiar from the most recent sources is our featured book for March 2011. A compilation by James Parton, the work is made up of a collection of biographical essays about several prominent women in history. Published in 1886, the book also contains a portrait of each subject. Parton was famous for his biographical writing, although the majority of his work focuses on celebrated and respected men instead of women. Daughters of Genius is an historical representation that demonstrates the integrity of feminism and influence of women in the past.
