“Quiet Cruelties: Prints, Sculpture, and Unique Works on Paper” by Rimer Cardillo will be on display at the University Art Museum (FA-213) from Jan. 24-March 23. Cardillo, professor of art at SUNY New Paltz, will give a public lecture on his work at the opening reception at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7.The exhibition draws on four decades of his artistic production using ambiguous printed imagery to critique invidious violence that underscores oppression. His work combines a great range of printing methods and techniques, from woodcut, engraving and etching to aquatint, mezzotint and silkscreen to create enigmatic visual statements that feature insects rather than individuals. A small exhibition of early modern illustrated books of natural history, on loan from the Special Collections of the Binghamton University Libraries, will be on view. Admission to the museum is free.
