Of Spice and Men: An Exhibit of Rare Books and Maps Related to the Commercial Revolution from the Medieval to the Early Modern World
In September 2010, CEMERS will host its annual conference. This year’s conference, “Negotiating Trade: Commercial Institutions and Cross-Cultural Exchange in the Medieval and Early Modern World,” will focus on the social, economic, legal, and administrative institutions that mediated between local and foreign merchants, state officials, creditors, money exchangers, and brokers. In conjunction with the conference, the Special Collections department of the Binghamton University Libraries has on exhibit wood block prints of Medieval Europe, engraved and hand painted 17th, 18th and 19th century maps of North American, South American and the Caribbean. Also on exhibit are expedition reports of searches for the fabled Northwest Passage, and rare books on late medieval geography, coinage in the Holy Roman Empire, theories on commerce, money and exchanges, trade, and cartography.
This exhibit will be on display in Special Collections on the second floor of the Bartle Library through the end of the Fall 2010 semester.
