Preparing for the big collections move

With a grand re-opening anticipated for early 2025, the Libraries are excited to showcase the latest update to our space on the third floor of Bartle Library. However, before we can share what the new space will look like and the exciting new opportunities and technology it will feature, we have to do one essential task… move our collections in!

As one of the last phases of the renovation project, the Libraries will be moving books between Bartle and Science Libraries beginning Monday, October 7. Physical collections in Special Collections and Archives, the University Downtown Center (UDC) Library and the Collection Management Facility (CMF) will not be impacted by this move.

This process involves three stages and will see approximately 440,000 books relocated to their new home.

Before the move

The Libraries anticipate no major disruptions to the access of materials. However, if there are known materials you may need for the fall and winter session or if you would prefer to browse the physical collection in person, we strongly encourage faculty and students to check out those items by Tuesday, October 1.

Faculty can submit early requests for winter 2024 and spring 2025 Course Reserves or ask that books be placed on hold if not certain yet about which books will be assigned in your course. Please contact Course Reserves at mainresv@binghamton.edu for assistance.

Moving timeline

Generally speaking, as the various parts of the collection are in transit from one location to the next, items will be requestable but not browsable. This means students, faculty and staff won’t be able to physically find a title on a shelf, but will always have access to the research materials they need through the online catalog. The timeline for the various subject areas include:

  • Stage One: First half of Literature from Science to Bartle third floor
In the first stage of the move, 190,000 books will be moved from the ground floor of the Science Library to the new compact shelving on the third floor of Bartle Library. These books cover the disciplines of Literature and Library Science / Bibliographies. (Call number range PQ-PZ and Z) While these books are in transit, they will be requestable but not browsable. Normal access will be restored once the third floor opens in early 2025.
  • Stage Two: Social Science disciplines back to Science Library
110,000 books will be permanently relocated from the fourth floor of Bartle Library to the ground floor of the Science Library. These books cover the disciplines of Geography, Anthropology, Economic History, Sociology and other social sciences materials. (Call number range: G-HM) While these books are in transit, they will be requestable but not browsable. Normal access will be restored once the collections move is complete in December 2024.
  • Stage Three: Second half of Literature from Science to Bartle fourth floor
In the third and final part of the move, 100,000 books will be moved from the ground floor of Science Library to the fourth floor of Bartle Library. These books cover the remaining Literature collection and Linguistics. (Call number range: P-PQ) While these books are in transit, they will be requestable but not browsable. Normal access will be restored once the collections move is complete in December 2024.

The Libraries will continue to provide ongoing updates throughout the duration of this project. For more information about the library renovation project, visit the Library Renovation page on the Libraries website.
