The 14th annual Pauline and Philip Piaker Memorial lecture will be held at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Chabad Center at 420 Murray Hill Road in Vestal. Each year the Chabad Center holds a lecture in memory of Philip Piaker, who was a distinguished professor of accounting at Binghamton University, and his wife, Pauline. This year’s lecture will feature Zvi Bielski, son of Zus Bielski, whose life story, along his brothers Tuvia and Asael, has recently gained renown with the release of the movie Defiance. The Bielskis saved 1,250 men, women and children, whose offspring today, number close to 20,000. It was the largest rescue of Jews by Jews during World War II. Zvi Bielski will speak on “Freedom Begins With an Act of Defiance: The Inside Story” and will screen the History Channel version of the story along with rarely seen footage of his father and uncle. A dessert buffet will follow the question-and-answer session. There is no charge, but reservations are necessary and can be made by writing info@chabadofbinghamton.com or calling Chabad at 797-0015.
