Elia Kazan had a long career, directing some of America’s classic films, such as On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire. Yet he was reviled by many for his testimony “naming names” before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1952. Even when he received his lifetime achievement Oscar in 1999, there were many in the audience who refused to clap or stand. Although his personal life is controversial, few can deny his skill as a filmmaker.
