Apply for a Critical Languages Scholarship

Deadline, January 25, 2008
In 2006, the U.S. Department of State established summer institutes for the study of critical foreign languages. These institutes are open to U.S. citizens who are undergraduate or graduate students or those who have graduated since May 2006.
Students in all disciplines including business, engineering, science, the social sciences and humanities are encouraged to apply.
They define critical languages as: Arabic; Bangla/Bengali; Chinese; Hindi; Korean; Persian; Punjabi; Russian; Turkish; and Urdu. The program is part of the National Security Language Initiative to expand the numbers of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. Recipients are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their professional careers.
All institutes are in overseas locations; the scholarships cover all program costs; all travel, visa fees, room, board, and all entrance fees for program activities. They anticipate awarding 525 scholarships for this summer.
The application deadline for this summer was just announced – it is January 25th for the on-line application. This is very short notice, but the announcement was just released. More information and the CLS application are available at www.CLScholarship.org.
